Limescale dissolves in acid, and citric acid and vinegar are acidic. Baking soda is a base and does nothing against limescale. Fill the kettle with water and a dash of vinegar or a spoonful of citric acid, bring to a boil, let it sit for half an hour, then boil twice with clean water. Citric acid has the least smell.
