In 1972, Somalia officially adopted a modified Latin alphabet for writing the Somali language, designed by linguist Shire Jama Ahmed. Before this, various scripts, including Arabic and the indigenous Osmanya script, were used. This standardization greatly boosted national literacy campaigns.
