A tonir is a cylindrical clay oven sunk into the ground, heated with wood or coal. Bakers slap the thin sheets of lavash dough directly onto the hot clay walls, where they cook in just a few seconds. This ancient baking method was inscribed on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2014.

The Temple of Garni, built in the first century AD, is thought to have been dedicated to Mihr, the ancient Armenian god of the sun. The linguist and theologian Mesrop Mashtots created the alphabet so Armenians could read Christian texts in their own language. It began with 36 letters, and two more were added in the Middle Ages for sounds like 'f' and 'o'. Today a monument of giant stone letters near Mount Aragats honours this heritage.
