The circuit, only about 3.3 km long, winds past the harbour, up and down steep hills and even through a tunnel, and for the rest of the year it is just ordinary roads. The race has been held since 1929, and it is the only Formula One race allowed to be shorter than the usual distance.

Monaco's coast is only about 3.8 km long, the shortest of any country that lies on the sea. The whole country covers about 2 square kilometres, which makes it smaller than New York's Central Park and the most densely populated sovereign state in the world.

Since 1999, the station and the whole railway line through Monaco have been underground, which freed up precious land in the city above. Part of the station even lies across the border, in the French town of Beausoleil.
