Minecraft was originally written entirely in Java, which made it highly customizable and allowed a massive modding community to grow. A separate version, known as Bedrock Edition, was later written in C++ to help the game run smoothly on consoles, phones, and modern computers.

A complete day in the game lasts exactly twenty minutes, with daytime taking up ten minutes, night lasting seven, and dawn and dusk sharing the remaining three. This rapid cycle keeps players on their toes as they must gather resources quickly before monsters spawn in the dark.

Markus Persson initially called the project Cave Game when he started coding it in 2009. He changed it to Minecraft: Order of the Stone before finally shortening it. The game was fully released in 2011 and went on to become the best-selling video game in history.

An End Portal is hidden deep inside a stronghold, and it only opens once all twelve frame blocks hold an Eye of Ender. You craft an Eye of Ender from an Ender Pearl and Blaze Powder. Thrown into the air, the eyes also float toward the nearest stronghold, so they double as a compass.

Diamond ore only drops a diamond when you mine it with an iron pickaxe or better. With a wooden or stone pickaxe the block simply breaks and you get nothing, which has made plenty of new players groan. That is why crafting an iron pickaxe is a big step in every new world.

Markus Persson was heavily inspired by Infiniminer, an open-source, block-based mining game released in 2009. He loved its building mechanics and decided to add survival, crafting and monsters. When Infiniminer's development stopped, Minecraft stepped in to fill the void.

The game's music producer, C418, accidentally recorded his cat waking up from a nap. The unusual, high-pitched noise was perfect for the floating, ghostly Nether mobs. Ghasts are huge, floating jellyfish-like ghosts that shoot fireballs, which makes those cute cat noises even funnier.

When asked about the name of the default player character, creator Markus Persson jokingly suggested "Steve" on a forum. The community adopted it instantly, and it became official. The female counterpart, Alex, was introduced later to bring more diversity to the game.
