The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo on June 28, 1914, is widely considered the trigger for World War I. Gavrilo Princip fired the fatal shots near the Latin Bridge. Interestingly, the bridge itself is one of the oldest Ottoman bridges in Sarajevo, dating back to the 16th century, and was originally made of wood before being rebuilt in stone.
