Bubbles was adopted by Jackson from a research facility in the 1980s. He became a constant companion, sleeping in a crib in Jackson's bedroom and even learning how to do a basic moonwalk. In 2005, Bubbles moved to a sanctuary for great apes in Florida, where he took up painting.

Jackson was born in the industrial city of Gary, Indiana, in 1958. His father formed the Jackson 5 there, practicing endlessly in their tiny family home. Although Motown Records was based in Detroit, the family did not move to California until after the group signed their major record contract.

Jackson and his co-inventors patented a special shoe system that slotted into pegs rising from the stage floor. This allowed him and his dancers to lean forward at an impossible 45-degree angle without falling. The patent was officially registered under US Patent Number 5,255,452.
