King Alfonso XIII granted the club its royal title in 1920. Along with the name, the club received the right to feature the royal crown on its official emblem. During the Spanish Second Republic, the crown and title were temporarily removed before returning for good.

Raúl González Blanco, simply known as Raúl, played 741 matches for the club between 1994 and 2010. He took over the record from another club legend, Manolo Sanchís, and is remembered as one of the ultimate symbols of Madrid's home-grown talent.

Santiago Bernabéu played as a forward for the club before serving as its president for 35 years. Under his leadership, the club was rebuilt after the Spanish Civil War and grew into a dominant European superpower. The stadium was named in his honor in 1955.
