Zlatan Ibrahimović signed with Ajax in 2001. He scored one of his most famous individual goals ever for Ajax against NAC Breda, dribbling past five defenders before slotting the ball home, a moment that launched him into global stardom.

Ajax dominated European football by winning the European Cup (now the Champions League) in 1971, 1972, and 1973. Because of this hat-trick, they were allowed to keep the physical trophy permanently, a rare honor in football.

Ajax is named after Ajax the Great, a hero of the Trojan War in Greek myth, and his head has been on the crest for almost a century. From 1990 the club used a minimalist version drawn with just eleven lines, one for each player on the pitch. In 2025 Ajax brought its classic crest back.

Ajax's youth academy is called De Toekomst, which translates to 'The Future'. It features its own massive training complex where young players are taught the same attacking 4-3-3 system used by the first team.

Ajax played at De Meer Stadion from 1934 until 1996. It was a cozy, traditional ground in east Amsterdam. While they played big European games at the nearby Olympic Stadium, De Meer was their true spiritual home.
