Santorini lies in the southern Aegean Sea, about 200 kilometres south-east of the Greek mainland. The Ionian Sea is on the other, western side of Greece.

Santorini is the rim of a giant volcano. After huge eruptions the middle sank and the sea flooded in, leaving a bay ringed by steep cliffs. A bowl like this is called a caldera.

Every evening crowds gather in Oia, at the northern tip of the island, to watch the sun sink into the sea. Some people even clap when it disappears.

The Cyclades get their name from the circle, 'kyklos' in Greek, that they form around the small island of Delos. Mykonos and Naxos belong to the group too.

The sand and pebbles are made of dark volcanic rock, so they get very hot in the sun. Santorini also has a Red Beach, below red cliffs.

An enormous eruption about 3,600 years ago buried Akrotiri under ash, keeping its houses and colourful wall paintings safe. The people seem to have left in time. Knossos is a famous palace on the nearby island of Crete.

Officially the island is called Thira, or Thera. The name Santorini comes from Saint Irene, the island's patron saint in the Middle Ages. Milos is another volcanic island in the Cyclades.

The ancient philosopher Plato told of Atlantis, an island that sank into the sea in a single day. Some think the story could be a distant memory of Santorini's eruption, but nobody knows for sure.

Nea Kameni, 'New Burnt Island', grew out of the sea in eruptions over the last few hundred years, most recently in 1950. Visitors take a boat there and walk up to the crater. Therasia is a quiet island on the rim, with a few small villages.
