The Maya did not eat chocolate in solid, sugary bars like we do today. Instead, they ground cacao seeds into a paste, mixed it with water, chili peppers, and cornmeal, and poured it back and forth between vessels to create a thick, frothy, bitter beverage. It was used in sacred rituals and was so valuable that cacao beans were even used as currency.

Cenotes are natural sinkholes resulting from the collapse of limestone bedrock, exposing groundwater underneath. In the arid Yucatan Peninsula, they were the primary source of drinking water. The Maya also viewed cenotes as sacred gateways to Xibalba, their underworld, and frequently threw precious objects, gold, and sacrificial victims into them.

Le Bleu Maya est un pigment remarquablement stable fabriqué en fusionnant un colorant indigo de la plante Indigofera avec un minéral argileux spécifique appelé palygorskite sous l'effet de la chaleur. Cette liaison chimique protège la couleur des acides, des intempéries et du temps. Le calendrier du compte long utilise un système vigésimal en base 20 pour enregistrer de longues périodes de temps. Un baktun comprend 144 000 jours, soit environ 394 ans. L'achèvement du 13e baktun en décembre 2012 a déclenché des rumeurs mondiales, bien que fausses, concernant une prophétie maya prédisant la fin littérale du monde.
