Mandela's famous autobiography, Long Walk to Freedom, details his early life, political journey, and long imprisonment. He secretly drafted the manuscript in prison with the help of fellow inmates who smuggled the pages out. The title No Easy Walk to Freedom belongs to an earlier collection of his articles and speeches published in 1965.

Mandela and F. W. de Klerk were jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 for their work in peacefully ending the apartheid regime. Although the two leaders held vastly different political views and often clashed during negotiations, they successfully cooperated to guide South Africa toward its first fully democratic election.

Robben Island lies in Table Bay, roughly 6.9 kilometers off the coast of Cape Town. During his 18 years there, Mandela was isolated in a tiny cell and subjected to hard labor in a lime quarry. The intense glare from the white lime permanently damaged his tear ducts, leaving him unable to cry tears for the rest of his life.

Mandela was born Rolihlahla Mandela. In Xhosa, the name colloquially translates to 'pulling the branch of a tree' or troublemaker. The English name Nelson was given to him on his very first day of school by his teacher, Miss Mdingane, following a common custom of giving African children English names during the colonial era.
