Standard indoor handball is played with seven players on each side: six court players and one goalkeeper. Until the mid-20th century, the sport was often played outdoors on a large grass field with eleven players per team, much like association football.

Adult handball is played in two halves of 30 minutes with a 15-minute break. Teams often score more than 30 goals each, so the scoreboard keeps ticking. Each team may also call a few one-minute timeouts to change tactics.

Germany won the gold medal in the 11-a-side field handball tournament at the 1936 Berlin Games, defeating Austria in the final match. Field handball was played outdoors on a soccer pitch, but it eventually lost popularity to the faster indoor version.
