Washington, D.C. is not part of any state: it is a special district, the District of Columbia. New York City is the biggest city in the country and was even the capital for a short time in the country's early years, but the government soon moved on.

There is one star for every state, and the 13 red and white stripes stand for the 13 colonies that won independence. The flag had 48 stars for 47 years, until 1959. Two new states joined that year, and the 50-star version has been flying since 1960.

The statue was a gift from the people of France and was unveiled in New York Harbor in 1886. Its metal frame inside was built by Gustave Eiffel, the man behind the Eiffel Tower. And it was not always green: the copper was shiny reddish-brown until air and rain slowly turned it green.

The bald eagle is not bald at all: the name comes from an old meaning of 'bald', which was 'white-headed'. Young bald eagles are mostly brown and only get their white head and tail at about five years old. The golden eagle is the one on Mexico's coat of arms.

Over millions of years, the Colorado River cut down through layer after layer of rock. The canyon is about 450 kilometres long and in places about 1.8 kilometres deep. The rocks at the very bottom are almost two billion years old, while the ones at the rim are 'only' about 270 million.

Hawaii became the 50th state in 1959 and is the only one south of the Tropic of Cancer. The Hawaiian alphabet is wonderfully short, with just 13 letters: five vowels and eight consonants, including a mark called the ʻokina that you can see in the islands' own spelling, Hawaiʻi.
